The Royal Mint of the United Kingdom, also known as the Royal Mint, is the second oldest mint in the world. It was founded in 886 by King Alfred the Great of the Kingdom of Wessex, present-day southern England. History of the Royal Mint

Its origins date back to the late 9th century, during the reign of King Alfred the Great of the Kingdom of Wessex (modern-day southern England).

The first coin minted was a silver penny. It commemorates the reconquest of London after the Viking occupation by the Anglo-Saxon army. This military operation led to the strengthening of London, making it one of the most important cities in Europe.

In 1279, the mint moved its operations to the Tower of London, the safest building in Europe at that time. According to records, the relocation cost the mint a total of 729 pounds, 17 shillings, and 8.5 pennies, which today would be equivalent to £800,000.

Three years after the move to the Tower, a quality control process was introduced by placing coins in a special box (pyx). The court called upon the Royal Mint’s overseer to check the weight and purity of the selected coins produced by the mint. This tradition still continues today.

The first gold coins appeared during the reign of King Edward III in the mid-14th century and are known as “gold nobles.”

A key figure in the history of the Royal Mint is Isaac Newton, the founder of modern physics. In 1696, at the age of 54, Newton became the overseer of the Royal Mint, and three years later, he became the master. He laid the foundations for the British bimetallic monetary system, establishing that one ounce of gold (31.1 grams) was worth 15.5 ounces of silver.

Currently, the Royal Mint is state-owned and operates under the direct control of the Treasury and Her Majesty. It produces investment products made of gold, silver, and platinum.

Today, the mint is owned by the British government, under the supervision of Her Majesty’s Treasury. It is also the official producer of investment products made of gold, silver, and platinum in the United Kingdom.

What products does the Royal Mint offer?

The Royal Mint’s product catalog is one of the most extensive in the industry. Although the main products are investment-grade gold coins, the Royal Mint also produces 24-carat gold bars. These bars range from one gram to one kilogram of pure gold.

When it comes to coins, there is a wide variety of products available. Most modern gold coins are made of pure gold, with weights ranging from 1/10 troy ounce (3.11 grams) to one troy ounce coins. The Royal Mint has created four categories of modern gold coins, based on the symbols featured on them:

  • Britannia

  • Lion and Eagle

  • Myths and Legends

  • Royal Tudor Beasts

Of these, Britannia is the most well-known gold coin globally. It is also one of the few investment-grade gold coins with four security features, making it difficult to counterfeit. Britannia coins are also available as investment-grade silver coins.

From the series of historical coins, the Royal Mint is the authority behind the sovereign – gold coins. These coins have existed since 1489, during the reign of King Henry VII. The aim was for these coins to represent the power and status of the British monarch, which is why almost all successors of King Henry VII minted sovereigns with their portraits. The only exception was King James I, who renamed the sovereigns to “unites” to present himself as the “King of Great Britain,” even though England and Scotland had not yet been declared a unified state.

Sovereigns are among the most widely circulated gold coins in history. They were so widely used that in 1808, they became legal tender in Portugal.

Sovereigns are made from 22-carat gold and come in four weights:

The most common sovereign is the 7.98-gram coin. Unlike the Britannia coins, sovereigns are made solely from gold.
